Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe is a nostalgic melon for me. When I see a bin overflowing with cantaloupes, it takes me back to my childhood. I remember warm, sunny mornings having a half a cantaloupe to myself for breakfast, sitting outside in the warm, morning sun! My Uncle Slim had a ranch in Los Banos, he grew melons “for the world” as I was told, as a kid! After our annual family reunions, my Uncle would send us home with a bounty of delicious cantaloupes. Ohh they were so good!! I’m always amazed when someone says they don’t like melons or cantaloupe in particular.  In my mind I think, well you don’t know how to pick one!! There is nothing worse than an underripe or bad melon of any kind. Even I’m not a fan. So, I say, How could you not love the this delicious, juicy, orange fruit with the unmistakeable fragrance that tastes like nectar? That’s ok, we don’t care more for those of us that do like cantaloupe. Now that the hot months are coming to an end, these late harvest melons are the best. Not only delicious but this watery fruit is loaded with nutrients such as beta carotene, selenium, vitamin C and B vitamins and lots of antioxidants, to say the least. When choosing a cantaloupe look for a firm melon with no soft spots and an even “netting” covering the melon. I always channel my Uncle to help me pick the best melons, works every time! Folklore says cantaloupes represent good fortune!! Well there you have it…nutritionally good for you, taste great AND good fortune. Go on then, go get a cantaloupe or two before they are all gone!
